Urumchi, whose name means "beautiful pasture" in the language of the local Dzungar people has much to offer the discerning traveler. Urumchi is set in the northwest of China in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. With an urban population of over 2.5 million people, the city has earned itself a mention in the Guinness Book of Records as being the most remote city from the sea anywhere in the world, being some 1,400 miles from the nearest coastline. The city is near the northern route of the Silk Road.
The climate in Urumchi is semi-arid with a large difference between summer and winter temperatures, varying between 23.7C (74.7F) and -12.6C (9.3F). The main language of the area is Uyghur, although many people also speak Mandarin Chinese.
Urumchi is a major industrial center within Xinjiang. As a result, the area is excellent at catering for the business traveler. The annual Urumqi Foreign Economic Relations and Trade Fair is the largest trade fair in western China, its purpose being to promote trading between northwestern China and foreign countries.

The Xinjiang Silk Road Museum concentrates on the Han and Tang dynasties as well as the cultures of the ethnic mix of the area. The Xinjiang Geological and Mineral Museum is one of China's largest geological museums and offers a fascinating insight into the natural resources of the area.
The area is well known for its food, in particular its naan, kebabs, pilaf and hand stretched noodles. There are numerous food stalls in the city as well as a wide range of restaurants, serving everything from Asian to Russian to American cuisine. Many of the hotels have a number of restaurants offering both Western and local dishes.

It is also a rail hub of Xinjiang, with the Lanxin railway connecting the area to the rest of China.
